What skate holders do you have?
How to Tell Which Holder Is on Your Skates
If you’re unsure which holder is on your skates, start by examining the holder closely:
-
Look for Branding: Both Bauer and CCM mark their skate holders with names or model numbers like “Lightspeed Edge,” “LS2,” “SpeedBlade XS,” or “4.0.” These are usually visible on the side of the holder.
-
Check for the Quick-Release Mechanism: Bauer’s TUUK Lightspeed Edge and CCM’s SpeedBlade XS have noticeable triggers or dials near the front. If your skate holder has a quick-release trigger or dial, it’s likely one of these models.
-
Height and Profile: The SpeedBlade 4.0 and TUUK LS2 have more traditional designs without quick-release features. The SpeedBlade 4.0, in particular, has a slightly higher profile for better stability, which you can notice by comparing to other holders.
Whether you prioritize speed of blade changes or stability, understanding your skate holders can help you get the most out of every skate session.
Bauer Skate Holders
- Bauer Powerfly Holders
- Basically: same holders as the Lightspeed Edge holders (below), but the only blades that fit in these holders are the most expensive blades on the market. Of course, all previous Bauer blades don't work in these. Bauer pulled off what can only be described as an "Apple" where they came out with a new feature, that forces their customers to spend more money, for exactly the same result as before.
-
TUUK Lightspeed Edge
- The TUUK Lightspeed Edge is Bauer’s signature skate holder, designed with a quick-release trigger mechanism that lets skaters change blades in seconds. This innovation is highly popular among elite players for its ease and speed.
-
Identifying Features: Look for a black trigger near the front of the holder. The TUUK Lightspeed logo is usually printed on the side.
-
TUUK LS2
- The TUUK LS2 holder is a classic design that emphasizes stability and is known for its durability. While it doesn’t have the quick-release trigger, it remains a reliable option for many skaters.
- Identifying Features: The TUUK LS2 often features a more straightforward, streamlined design without the trigger mechanism. Look for “LS2” branding near the rear of the holder.
CCM Skate Holders
-
SpeedBlade XS
- The SpeedBlade XS holder is CCM’s answer to the quick-release feature, allowing skaters to switch blades fast with its innovative "BladeLock" system. This holder is designed to maintain excellent energy transfer and durability.
-
Identifying Features: The SpeedBlade XS features a yellow knob or dial near the front, which locks and releases the blade. “XS” is often marked on the side as well.
-
SpeedBlade 4.0
- The SpeedBlade 4.0 offers a traditional design and is known for its exceptional stability, thanks to its slightly taller holder height. Although it doesn’t include a quick-release, it’s a favorite for players who prioritize a solid connection to the ice.
-
Identifying Features: The SpeedBlade 4.0 has a taller profile than some other holders, and it usually displays “4.0” on the side.
